The build up of David's feelings toward Mark up until the tipping point of the trip to South America was wonderfully written. it portrayed pretty accurately the torments, the obsessions of a love in secret. The break down of David after the trip was heart broken to read. There were lots of snippets about their lives after that faithful trip, mostly David's. These gave me a roller coaster ride because some of them made me said 'oh no' and then some gave me hope. The conclusion was what I was hoping for but I must said that it was a bit abrupt.
The main supporting characters were not merely one-dimensional but had depths, especially James.

This seems like the first book from D Bunyan but I found his/her writing uncanny similar to Jay Mandal. I loved Jay's books but he hadn't written anything that I'm aware of in a long time. I don't know if they are one of the same, but I will surely purchase the next novel from Bunyan.

This novel takes a while to get going, but whilst perseverance may be required, it's ultimately rewarded.
The author has woven issues of sexual identity, infidelity and professional ethics into a narrative that eventually compels the reader towards an insightful account of a life slowly disintegrating. I recommend it.
This novel is almost really good. The writing is exemplary. Ms. Bunyan sure can write, wrapping words around places, situations and characters' hearts that are evocative and confident.

And perhaps therein lies my disappointment. The book did not strike me as being worthy of its brilliant writing.

David is a school teacher, soon to be married, living the enviable life in a lovely home (one that his future wife is dying to move out of to a much larger, more "appropriate" house more suited to her station in life).

What's missing in his life is passion. He has done pretty much everything that he is supposed to do, looks like an up-and-comer, fits in everywhere, but there is no fire, no hope, no expectation in his life or in his relationship with Clare. That is, until he gets involved with one of his students, and much to his own surprise, it's one of his male students. Mark is disadvantaged, living in public housing since his father abandoned his family, but brilliant when inspired by the disciplined teacher and mentor, David. For David, this puts everything at risk - his career, his marriage, his friends, everything he always though he wanted. But he can't stay away from him. He consoles himself with the thought that Mark is just a final-year student, he will soon go off to university, forget about him and fall in love with someone his own age.

From day one of the relationship, David is plotting its end. And that is the part that got to me. The obstacle to be overcome in "It's You" is the soul, the mind, the confusion of its lead character. He is a coward, terrified to grasp for even a moment of real happiness. He sees it as insanity, and his sterile, but highly-regulated relationship with Clare as "real life".

For the first hundred-some-odd pages, I couldn't decide whether David was a coward or mentally ill. It turns out to be both. But what I found eminently dislikable is the trail of pain he leaves behind, as he travels through life, deceiving, hiding, unsympathetic to the feelings of those he leaves behind as "collateral damage" until, at some point, he falls apart. It is a well-earned breakdown. His selfishness and his deceit cannot go on forever. At some point, reality and his internal version of it have to come to loggerheads. And they do.

I won't get into the minutia, for there's much detail and multiple relationships in this longish book. I like long books, but this one seemed to drag at points - the year he spends at school with his student, Mark, sometimes seems as though it really takes a year to read -, and then it suddenly winds down in a two-page, precipitous resolution, as though the author just ran our of stamina, eventually, and had to stop from exhaustion.

Yet, it is so well-written that it is impossible to walk away from, even as it fails to satisfy.

The editing was, however, not so good. "You're" instead of "Your", plurals with apostrophes, a slew of words missing the spaces between them and other typos and assorted grammatical problems kept breaking me out of the story at inopportune moments.

"It's You" is a long character study. In order for a character study of more than 300 pages to work, you have to be drawn deeply into, and sympathetic with the character. Sometimes I was. Sometimes I wasn't.

I am so impressed with this talented British author that I really, really wanted to love and cherish this book. Sadly, I didn't. But it doesn't mean I won't read anything else she publishes. To the contrary, I can't wait to read her other work. With a really good editor, this could have been superb. Here's hoping she's found one for her newer books.
I have an issue with teachers having affairs with their students. I thought I would have a hard time reading this book but Bunyan does a great job of concentrating on the emotional attachment of the two men. David is a school teacher in England and works with a lot of Level 6 students who are probably an equivalent of U.S. seniors. Matt is in love with David and professes his love. Slowly David realizes that he has feelings for Matt too and then begins their relationship. Matt is 18 when they first have sex and I think David is probably around 28. David is also engaged to be married to Clare. Soon David is consumed by his love for Matt and needing to be with him.

This book is about how deep we can love someone no matter what sex they are. It's about sorrow and how deep you can hit bottom when that love is gone. I will say the ending was a little abrupt. I won't give anything away but I do want to know more of Matt's thinking. There were a few times I had to re-read something because I felt I got a little lost in what was going on. Don't know if it was becomes that instant the description was wordy or I was distracted. I did find I was pulled into the story and cared a little about the characters.
His girlfriend is called Clare but one night Kate is coming the the bed. Who is Kate? One might think. It is Clare, just a type. And so on. People come and go, are barely introduced. After some time you might find out who they are.

The idea behind the story is good. But these people all behave like utter idiots. It is unclear what motivates them in most cases.

I put the book away a number of times, finally finished it on a long flight. It has its' moments.
